Atol/ Godshe Goan Sweet

Atol/ Godshe is a Goan sweet that is prepared as a tea time snack. Traditionally it is also one of the sweets prepared in the month of August, to celebrate The Feast of Harvest or The Konsachem Fest.Ingredients:

1Cup/ 225 grms Goan Rice or white Rice
1Cup/ 225 grms Chana Dal or Moong Dal
600 ml Thick Coconut milk ( *See notes)
100 grms Palm Jaggery crushed
100 grms Sugarcane Jaggery crushed
1 tsp salt
2 turmeric leaves or 2 tsp Cardamom powder
1 tsp pure ghee 

Directions:

1. In a bowl, Put 1 cup rice and 1 cup Chana Dal and soak with water for 1 hr. After 1 hr wash the rice and Dal mixture twice. 

2. Put the mixture in a pressure cooker, add 500 ml/ 2 cups of water,or untill the rice is covered with water. Add 1/2 tsp of salt and cook on medium flame for 5 whistles.

3. Once ready, add the coconut milk, add the palm & Sugarcane Jaggery and turmeric leaves and mix well, add 1/2 tsp salt or as per taste.

4. Cook on low flame for about 25 mins. Or until it’s dry but slightly wet.(* see notes)

5.     Grease a dish with some pure ghee and pour the Atol in. Allow it to cool and set.. 

Enjoy Delicious Atol/ Godshe with a Cup of Tea...


Recipe Notes:

  • * Coconut milk: Grind 1 grated coconut with 3 cups of water to get a fine paste. Then sieve the coconut paste to get a thick coconut juice.
  • *If you want to eat the Atol/ Godshe in a dessert bowl, and not the cut pieces then remove it when it is done and still has quite some coconut milk in.
  • *If you want to cut and eat the Atol/ Godshe then it has to be a dry, but not completely dry, slightly wet, as it dries up when u put to to set in a dish.
  • You can also use a mixture of both dals, 1/2 cup chana dal & 1/2 cup moong dal.
