Goan Prawn Curry with Ladyfingers

The Goan Prawn curry recipe needs no introduction. Fish Curry Rice, is loved and enjoyed by all Goans, this authentic Goan prawn curry with Ladyfingers is so delicious, I am sure you will enjoy it.

Ingredients:

To cook the prawns curry
400 grms Prawns ( cleaned & deveined)
140 grms Lady fingers(cut into 1"inch pieces)
1 Onion chopped 
1 Tomato chopped 
4 Kokum ( Optional)
2 Tbsp Coconut oil/ or cooking oil
Salt to taste
Pinch of Sugar ( optional)
Water as required 

For the curry paste
¾  cup Coconut grated
9 – 10 Dried Kashmiri Red Chillies
4 - 5 Garlic Cloves
1 tsp Peppercorns
1 & ½ Tbsp Coriander Seeds
1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
1 Small knob of Tamarind
1 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
1 cup Coconut Milk ( click link below)
Water as required 

Directions:

1. Clean the prawns, devein and wash them well 2 -3 times. Add salt, mix well and set aside.


2. Grind all the ingredients mentioned under for the curry paste with coconut milk, add a bit of water if required, to form a smooth paste and set aside.

3.In a pot, heat oil and sauté the onion, as they turn translucent, add tomatoes and Cook till they turn soft. Next add the prawns and fry for about 2 mins.

4. Add the ground curry paste, Lady fingers, kokum and salt to the pot, add water according to the consistency required by you.
5.Bring the curry to a boil, on low flame and cook untill the Lady fingers are done, add a pinch of sugar if you want.

Let the curry rest for 5 minutes before serving with Steamed Rice.

Recipe Notes:
  • You can skip the Ladyfingers and make plain prawn curry.
  • If you don't have Kokum available, you can adjust the sourness in the curry with some tamarind water instead.
  • You can also add a veg stock cube or maggie cube for additional taste, adjust salt accordingly.
  • The ground curry paste can be refrigerated for 2 days and frozen for a month.
